Melanie & Cornelius.

Westbury Village Hall, near Shrewsbury

Melanie and Cornelius were married on a Saturday afternoon in July at Westbury Village Hall, out past Shrewsbury on the Shropshire and Welsh border. They booked two hours of photography. Not a full day, not a package with a highlight film attached, just the middle of the afternoon covered properly. It is one of the most useful jobs we did all summer, and worth writing up for that reason alone.

Two hours, and what actually fits in them

Most wedding photography is sold by the day, and for a lot of couples that is the right thing to buy. For plenty of others it is not. Melanie came to us about two weeks out, knowing exactly what she wanted: the ceremony, the confetti, the family together outside, and enough of the reception to remember it by. Everything before and after, she was happy to leave to the phones in the room.

Two hours from two o'clock covered the ceremony from start to finish, the ring exchange, the walk back up the aisle, the confetti outside the doors, the full run of family groups, portraits of the two of them in the grounds, and the first part of the garden reception. Two hundred and fifty six edited photographs. What it does not cover is getting ready in the morning, speeches, or a first dance, and we said so before she booked rather than after.

The trade is a real one and it is worth being straight about it. A short booking means the coverage has to be planned tightly and the family groups have to be organised in advance, because there is no slack in the schedule to recover from a slow start. Done that way it works. Done casually it does not.

Westbury Village Hall

Village halls have a reputation that this one does not deserve. Westbury is a modern building on Hinwood Road, with tall windows down one side of the main room and a plain pale interior. That combination does most of the work for you. The ceremony was lit entirely by daylight coming through those windows, with nothing added, which is the single thing that makes a room easy or difficult to photograph.

The room was laid out with white chair covers, pink sashes and a floral arch at the front. Outside there is a covered entrance that turned out to be the best spot of the day, because it gave the confetti somewhere to hang in the air rather than blow straight off. Beyond that, an open grass area with a hedge line and a painted fence, which is where the group photographs and the couple portraits were made.

For a couple looking at a hall rather than a hotel, the useful point is this: what matters for photographs is window light, somewhere sheltered to stand outside, and a bit of green to put people against. Westbury has all three.

The day

The room was full, with a lot of family and a lot of small children, which set the tone of the whole afternoon. Melanie came in to a room of people already on their feet. The ceremony ran straight through, the rings went on, and they walked back out through applause.

Confetti outside the entrance was the loudest moment of the day and produced the frame at the top of this page. From there we went straight into family groups, working through them quickly while everyone was still gathered in one place. One of the grandmothers was with us for those, and getting her into the photographs properly was the part of the afternoon that mattered most.

The reception moved out into the garden. There was a mobile cocktail bar set up against a pink flower wall, a bouncy castle that the children took over immediately and Cornelius joined not long after, and food going round in the sun. We covered the first stretch of it and left them to the rest of the evening.

Photography in Shropshire

We are based in Staffordshire and work across the West Midlands, and Shropshire is comfortably within reach. This one was photographed by Ryley Morton for Chroma Weddings. If you are getting married at a village hall, a small venue or anywhere that does not need a full day of coverage, it is worth asking about a shorter booking rather than assuming you have to buy the whole thing. Have a look at the other weddings here, or at the Staffordshire page for how we normally work.

"Amazing quality pictures, such a friendly team and fast delivery of our pictures! 100% would recommend literally captured all our memories from our special day!"
