About The Old School House

The Old School House, which trades today as The School House but is still searched and known by the old name, sits in the village of Weeford a few minutes south of Lichfield. It is family-run, restaurant and wedding venue in one, set in eleven acres of gardens that run down to Black Brook. The feel is relaxed countryside, not the flat banquet-hall look that a lot of hotel venues default to.

It is licensed for civil ceremonies across five rooms and takes anything from 4 to 160 guests, which is unusual. It scales right down to an eight-person ceremony-and-drinks elopement and right up to a full wedding in the Wyatt Pavilion, and photographs well at either end.

The light, the spaces, and where the photos live

The thing to plan around is the wisteria bridge. A timber footbridge over Black Brook, swagged in wisteria that flowers in May, water beneath and greenery all round. When it is out it is the best portrait spot on the site and does most of the work itself. There is a Meadow Pagoda for outdoor ceremonies and portraits too, though it is weather-dependent. The bridge and the wider garden are the reliable fallback when Staffordshire does what it does.

For ceremonies, the Masters Room is the intimate option, a stacked-stone feature wall and soft window light, good for small ceremonies where you want everyone close. The Wyatt Pavilion is the bigger room, looking out over the brook and the Weeford meadows, bright and neutral and easy to shoot in. Eleven acres means that even on a short day you are not stuck for somewhere to put people.

The church across the lane

If you want a church ceremony, St Mary the Virgin sits directly opposite the venue. It is a small Grade II parish church built in 1802 by James Wyatt, the same architect the venue's Wyatt Pavilion is named after. Couples can marry in the church and walk across the lane to The Old School House for photographs and the reception, keeping the whole day inside a few hundred yards. Steve and Alex did exactly that in 2023, a church service and then straight over to the gardens.

Common questions about The Old School House weddings

Is The Old School House a good wedding venue for photography?

Yes. The standout is the wisteria-clad timber bridge over Black Brook, which flowers in May and is the best portrait spot on the site. The Masters Room gives soft, window-led light for intimate ceremonies, the Meadow Pagoda and eleven acres of garden offer outdoor portraits, and the Wyatt Pavilion handles larger receptions.

It is a relaxed countryside setting rather than a flat hotel-banquet space, which gives more texture to shoot into.

How many guests can The Old School House hold?

It is licensed for civil ceremonies across five rooms and takes anything from 4 to 160 guests. That range means it suits both tiny ceremony-and-drinks elopements and full-size weddings in the Wyatt Pavilion.

Where is The Old School House wedding venue?

It is in the village of Weeford, just south of Lichfield in Staffordshire (WS14 0PW). Family-run restaurant and wedding venue set in eleven acres of gardens running down to Black Brook, directly opposite St Mary the Virgin church.

Can you get married in the church next to The Old School House?

Yes. St Mary the Virgin sits directly across the lane. Couples can hold a church service there and walk across to the venue for photographs and the reception, keeping the whole day within a few hundred yards. We have photographed exactly that here.

What's the best time of year to photograph a wedding at The Old School House?

May is special because the wisteria on the bridge is in full bloom, a backdrop you cannot fake. Through summer the eleven acres, the meadow and the pagoda all come into play. The Masters Room ceremony light works year-round, so winter weddings still photograph cleanly indoors.
